History of betting in the Czech Republic

The history of betting dates centuries back. In the middle ages, betting games kept changing places between popular and unpopular games. In1355, Emperor Charles IV introduced a code, Maiestas Carolina, that introduced provisions restricting gambling for money.

This is the earliest record found regarding betting in the Czech Republic. In the 18th century, different bookshops started being built to offer betting games. In addition to this, licensing started being issued for opening such companies. Legal documents from this time also have evidence about regulations of licensed games.

20th century

During the world war period, gambling caught fire and was widespread throughout Czechoslovakia. Thousands of gambling machines were installed and operated in the country from 1919 to 1939.

From 1948 to 1989, many other games, including lottery, sports betting, horse betting, and several others, were permitted to be played openly in the Czech Republic. This attracted an audience from all over the country. By the end of the Soviet era, around the 1990s, laws on Lotteries and Other Games were legalized. This was a positive move the government took regarding betting games.
