A new legislative act no. 186/2016 was passed in 2017 focused on strict control of gambling. The new law imposed taxes on bettors, removing illegal sites.
The minimum age for gambling is 18 years old, and betting is prohibited in public, security, and healthcare. This law explicitly defines all types of gambling activities. The Minister of Finance regulates all gambling activities around the country.
The popularity of betting in the Czech Republic
Betting games are widespread in the Czech Republic. Slightly over 43% of the population about the age of 15 gambled in the previous year. International operators in the Czech have to be licensed and pay taxes to be eligible for hosting events.
Although significant restrictions have been imposed, taxation increased, and other rules applied, online gambling activities have increased in the past decade. The Czech Republic is considered one of the most openly accepting countries for betting, as not much has been done regarding betting. However, there are different rules for online and land-based betting.
